  When I was a child, around ten years old. Every summer, I was really looking forward to coming summer festival. It was held at the shrine in our town at the last weekend in August. It was the biggest event for children in the long summer vacation.

  In the afternoon, after taking a bath, my aunt put us make-up with an eyebrow pencil and white powder and a lip stick, somehow patting lots of white baby powder by Johnson and Johnson whole my body. Looking into the mirror, my deep tanned face was changing to a pretty girl. My lips looked like a little red rose. " Oh, is that me? Am I such a pretty girl?" I realized that I was a girl for the first time.

  Putting a colorful flower hat on my head, wearing happi which is an outfit for the festival, hanging Japanese traditional towel and the most important stuff, purse on my neck. My brother shouted " Here we go!" we all followed him and ran outside where the festival float had already been waiting for us. We pulled the float chanting loudly "Wha-shoy! Wha-shoy! "to the shrine.

  There were many street vendors with games and festival food such as Takoyaki, Isoyaki ( My favorite food ,Maybe it was sold only in our area ),Yakisoba,Yakitori, cold shaved ice with syrup, fluffy cotton candy, various masks and colorful yo-yos. Dipping for gold fish, hopping green frog toy, colored chicks and so on.
I loved Isoyaki, cotton candy, shaved ice with lemon syrup ,Dipping for gold fish, and yo-yos.

  The highlights of the summer festival were performances on the stage at the shrine. We, little girls danced some Bon-dance such as 東京音頭、オバQ音頭, the most difficult one was 八木節 we practiced a lot. After finishing dancing we got lots of sweets and popsicles. " What a fantastic night! "

  Taking a look at the stage, I could hear the incredible noisy sounds, the electric guitars and drums. Teke Teke Teke Four young guys seemed like The Beatles or The Monkees, having long hair. " Oh boy !" I shouted. " That's my uncle! He is playing the electric guitar now! COOL!! " I was so excited to hear the sounds and really proud of him.

  After the festival, the next morning was so quiet and made me feeling lonely a little bit. I sat down in front of my mother's mirror again and tried to pat white powder on my face secretly. " Oh-sing tsuku-tsuku, Oh-sing tsuku-tsuku " cicadas were singing outside. I felt my summer vacation would be over. There were lots of homework I hadn't finished yet.... I breathed a deep sigh......Phew....ふう..

  Thank you so much for reading my story.
  Have a nice summer holidays! See you!
..

P.S I'm not sure about the imitative words. ( 擬音語)
If you know well about them , Please let me know.

Please listen and enjoy both of these songs.
I bet you would love them and have nostalgic feelings.

It reminded me good old days and a thing of Japan. For half a year since I came here, I missed Japan so much to the extent I couldn't concentrate on my work. Recently I found myself fading away such a sentiment, however, reading your comment makes me a little nostalgic. I wish I could have a summer vacation...
Thank you!

Hello TA-san.
How are you doing? Thank you so much for reading my long
story. After writing my story, I thought I should have
shortened more my article though, Lots of scenes of my
memory of the summer festival came over my mind then, so
I couldn't help myself writing all the precious memories.
Well , Your home town is close to mine, I'm glad if you
could share this nostalgic feeling with me.
Have you ever tried to eat " Isoyaki "? I hope you know it !
See you!

Hi! Moko! This entry is very fascinating to me. Certainly because it has brought to my mind again the great time I had in my childhood.

I have never eaten Isoyaki but always eaten Takoyaki and Kasutera-yaki at the festival sites. I was surprised that you had put full makeup on at the festival! As for me, no makeup! Other children and I simply took part in the parade pulling the float around the city.

Tudsuki

At night each float was decorated with so many lanterns! And all the illuminated floats paraded on the main street.

Oh! I also ate popcicles (笑) Thank you for such a lovely story! I enjoyed it a lot!

I couldn't go back to my hometown this obon season, So I wrote
this story to yearn for my hometown where my family, ralatives
and friends live. I really miss them.

Ialso like Takoyaki but I've never eaten Kasutera-yaki.

Yes, there were 7 floats in our town decorated with
lots of lanterns , my brother used to play the Japanese
big drum and other boys play the small drums and Fue.
At night they were all lighted up and so beautiful.

I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed my story.
Thank you and see you!
