The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit kicked off yesterday, July 7th 2008, at Windsor Hotel in Toyako-cho,Hokkaido. I've ever visited Toyako with my family and drove around the beautiful blue lake Toyako in summer in 2000 after erupting of the volcano ,Usu-Zan.

The quiet Toyako showed us both the marvelous natural beauty and the threat of disasters. We can do nothing when we face on such disasters.

At the summit , now the leaders of each eight country are having discussion about the various worldwide issues such as global warming, food crisis, aid for Africa, oil prices and so on. They can make the agreements to solve these problems.

As for me, the summit reminds me this words " Think globally, Act locally". More than ten years ago, An American guy ,an English teacher, and my friend and I did a volunteer work to stop IDLING . It's one of the way to suppress the global warming. We made flyers and handed them to the drivers and commuting people in front of the station.

That was my first experience of doing volunteer work though, To tell honestly, I was so embarrassed to hand them to the people. Because most of them refused to take them. Some people threw them away on the road. Oh no..... Taking a look at him, no matter how he was refused by the people, he tried to appeal it to the taxi drivers, track drivers, of course, ordinary ones in poor Japanese.

"クルマヲトメテイルトキハ エンジンヲ トメテクダサイ チキュウノタメデス ミナサンノタメデス キョウリョクシテクダサイ ”
His strenuous action made me admired and moved a lot.

Through the experience of that volunteer work, I learned a lot not only the environments but also thinking about various issues in the world.

At my English classroom, My students and I collected stationeries such as pencils , notebooks and erasers and sent them to the children in Zambia last month. And now we are collecting used prepaid cards for the developing countries in Asia. The action we can do is only a small thing though, I do believe that spirit will have been in their heart and growing big ”love Earth heart " toward the future.

I also do hope The G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit would be successful and end safely tomorrow.

Thank you so much for reading my article.

As I read the latest norako's article , I imagined the peaceful scenery in Toyako.
This song is befitting with it.

New buses in my city stop idling and submerge only left door side. Some people try to segregate peoples each other by nation, region and even city. But in the 21st century we have to think globally. So English is the best tool for us. See you...

Hi, Moko! Relating to G8 Summit, I wonder if the Group of Eight industrialized nations can take any effective measures to get a handle on recent skyrocketing food and crude oil prices. As Marvin Gaye sang in his famous song, "What's Going on", <Mother, mother There's too many of you crying 〜〜〜You know we've got to find a way To bring some lovin' here today>, I'm concerned about the situation.

What wonderful activities you are initiating! And I totally agree with your idea that we need to start from a small step. Our organization has been very concerned about climate change for years and we now started "Carbon Zero Movement" in that we try to discharge as minimum CO2 as possible and we will offset the amount that we release throughout our activities. (To be continued)

We are doing this because we believe everything in the world including "Mother Earth" is a manifestation of the Grand Life. Unfortunate to say, however, I think we cannot expect so many for G-8 summit in terms of the climate change issue because interest between countries should conflict. All we should do is to do what we can, but it will have great impact on the world gradually. Thank you for sharing impressive thought.

Hi Sapphire !
G8 summit seems to be going forward well a little bit
with the agreement. "to seek and share" with both developing
and developed states the goal of halving global emissions
by 2050. But I also still concerning about elevated commodity
prices, especially oil and food. To tell honestly, I bought
lots of food such as saysouce, oil, soybean paste, flour etc.
and store in a closet.Of course toilet papers,tissues..

And I try to tell to my 18 years old twin children not
to use lots of water and electricity very strictly.
It's good for both eco (ecology and economical !) right?

your cheerful comments encourage me a lo----t !

Hello TA san,
When we think about those issues in this world.
I feel I'm really tiny one and no power though,
Many ideas came over my mind. For example, How to
save the energy, how to save money for food and all
the things in our daily life.

My grandmother used to tell us " モッタイナイ”
like Kenyan enviromentalist ,Wangari Maathai.
The spirits of this word showed us what we can do now.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments.
See you ! (*^v^*)/
